Restlessness is treated as a fault to be corrected, and everybody has a suggestion. Something is wrong with the sleep, or the habits, or the attention, or what is being taken in. So one of those things gets corrected, and it settles for a while, and then it comes back, and something else gets corrected and the cycle begins again.
People do this for years and not one of them holds. Every method works briefly and then stops working, and each time the conclusion is that the wrong method was chosen and a better one must exist somewhere. Eventually a different possibility occurs, which is that the restlessness is not a malfunction at all. It is the only part still reporting honestly.
And if that is true, then every successful attempt to quiet it was an attempt to silence the last thing that was telling the truth. That changes everything about how it gets dealt with, though not immediately and not comfortably.
What it actually is
Restlessness is what happens when something is wrong below the surface and nothing on the surface is willing to admit it. The surface has excellent reasons for not admitting it, and the surface deserves some fairness here. The arrangement works. People depend on it. There is no obvious alternative and there is certainly no good time.
So the report is refused at the top, and it does not go away because reports do not go away, and it comes out instead as a general inability to settle that attaches itself to nothing in particular. Which is why a restless person can never say what is actually wrong. Nothing is wrong, and that is precisely the difficulty. Everything is in order and something underneath is not accepting the order.
And because it will not name itself, it gets attached to whatever is available and vaguely plausible. A job that is not the problem. A house that is not the problem. A person who is not the problem. Enormous changes get made at real cost to everybody involved, and six months later it is back, unchanged, because it was never about any of that.
Going down instead of across
What eventually works, and it is usually done badly and much too late, is to stop trying to fix it and to go down after it instead. That means cutting off from the outside for a stretch of time, being very quiet, and not permitting the usual distractions.
The first part of that is horrible and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Everything that has been outrun arrives at once and in no particular order, and there is no sense of progress at any point, and no way of knowing whether anything is happening. Most people stop here, quite reasonably, and nobody who stops should be blamed for it.
But those who stay find that something eventually shows itself, and it is almost never what was expected. Usually it is something small and old and quite specific, sitting underneath a great deal of noise, which had been asking for attention for years while an entire life was being redesigned around not hearing it.
Understanding, and then quiet
The unexpected part is what happens once the root is actually seen. There is no effort required after that, which is not how anything else works. The understanding arrives, and acceptance comes with it naturally and without being summoned, and the restlessness simply is not there any more. Not managed. Absent.
Then a person goes back among people to test it, and sometimes they hold and other times they do not. When they do not, they go back and work on it further until there is some confidence again. This is a cycle and it does not end, and it is not a problem with them. It is much closer to the way a house needs attention, not because there is anything wrong with the house.
What remains surprising is how long anybody spends trying to quiet the one signal they have. Everything else has learnt, very thoroughly, to say that things are fine. The restlessness never learnt. It is the only part that was never trained, and a decade can be spent trying to train it.
