Thousands of bright stars scattered across an immense empty sky, the loneliness that company cannot reach because it is not about company

The loneliness that has nothing to do with people

People decide to make friends, and find themselves lonelier than before.

There comes a period in many lives when an ache appears that cannot be named, and the most obvious explanation is reached for. The most obvious explanation is that there is nobody close. It makes complete sense, because people who are lonely are lonely on account of not having people. So a decision gets made, quite deliberately, the way capable people decide most things, to go out and make some friends.

And it works, in the sense that friends appear. Then, within a year, something becomes clear that nobody expects. They are lonelier than before, measurably lonelier, and now they also carry a set of obligations that mean nothing to them and cannot be put down without hurting somebody. A symptom was treated with the wrong medicine and a second illness was produced in the process.

It takes far longer than it should to see what actually happened. Loneliness is not caused by the absence of people. It is felt when a person has become disconnected from themselves, and once somebody has gone away from themselves, there is no number of people who can stand in for the person who is missing. The person who is missing is them. Nobody else can occupy that position, however much they love them.

Why more company makes it worse

Adding company to that kind of loneliness makes it worse, and the mechanism is not hard to see once it is looked at. Every hour spent maintaining a relationship that does not reach you is an hour not spent finding the way back. And there is a second thing, harder to say plainly. In company a person must be somebody. They must present a version, respond appropriately, be the person these people already know, and that is precisely the activity that took them away from themselves in the first place.

So they sit in a room full of warm people who genuinely like them, and the ache is not smaller. It is louder, because now it has something to be measured against. Here is closeness, real closeness, directly in front of them, and it does not touch the thing. That is a disorienting experience, and it is one of the reasons that people who look extremely well surrounded sometimes describe themselves as the loneliest people they know.

Most of them assume there is something wrong with them for feeling it, and carry a fair amount of shame about it for years. There is not. It is simply information, delivered in the only way information of that kind can be delivered, which is uncomfortably and at a bad moment. The alternative would have been not to receive it at all.

When did we leave

The more useful question turns out not to be who is missing from a life, but when did the person leave their own. And that is not a dramatic moment for anybody. There is no morning on which somebody packs a bag and abandons themselves. It happens in a thousand small agreements. A yes where a no was meant. A thing that moves them decided to be impractical and put away for now. Learning which parts go down well and which do not, and beginning, quite sensibly, to lead with the ones that go down well.

Each of those is nothing at all. Each is entirely reasonable and would be defended by any advisor consulted. And a decade of them adds up to a person who is extremely competent at being received and has very little idea what they actually think about anything. Nobody notices it happening, because it never happens. It only accumulates, which is a different thing and much harder to see.

By the time the loneliness is felt, the departure is already many years old and the trail is cold. Which means the loneliness was never the problem at all. It was the first honest signal received in a very long time, and years get spent trying to make it stop.

What the signal is for

The people who stop treating it as something to be cured are not enjoying it, and they have not made some serene peace with it. They have simply noticed something plainer. Every time it is treated by adding something from outside, it grows. Every time somebody sits with it instead and asks what it is pointing at, something moves. That is not a philosophy, it is only what happens, repeatedly, over enough years to be worth trusting.

Usually what it points at is a part of a person that was put away long ago because it was inconvenient to somebody, or unfashionable, or simply took too long to explain to people who were not going to be interested. That part is still there. It has not gone anywhere and it has not deteriorated. It has only been waiting, without complaint, in a room nobody enters any more.

None of this says that people do not matter or that closeness is unnecessary. Closeness is one of the most beautiful things there is and almost everybody wants it badly. The point is narrower. Company can only reach somebody who is in. If they have gone out, then all the company in the world simply gathers in an empty house and waits, and the ache continues, and nobody in the room understands why.

The Better Living

I made The Better Living for the few who have arrived at success and found an emptiness waiting on its far side, not to fix anything, only to look honestly, together. If something here speaks to you, write to me.

Begin with a conversation

If something here has met a quiet truth in you, I would be glad to hear from you. There is no hurry, and nothing to prove, only, if you wish it, a conversation.
