A great golden nebula burning at the heart of a dark sky, an admired life with something quite different happening inside it

Nobody would believe you are struggling

The life is genuinely enviable. That is exactly what makes it impossible to say.

There is a specific kind of difficulty that comes with having a life other people want. It cannot be reported to anybody. Every attempt to describe it comes out sounding either like boasting or like ingratitude, and usually like both in the same sentence, and so most people inside it simply stop attempting after the second or third try.

Everything visible is real. The work went well. The house is what was hoped for. The people are good people who genuinely care. Nobody is lying about any of it and nobody is being deceived by anything. And none of it is what is actually happening.

The gap between those two is where a person lives, sometimes for many years. It is a very quiet place and there is nobody else in it, and there is no reliable way to describe its location to anybody standing outside.

Why it cannot be said

Try to say it out loud and listen to how it comes out. You have everything and you feel nothing. The sentence is unusable. To the person hearing it, the first half cancels the second half, and the honest response is bewilderment or a mild irritation that they will quickly and kindly hide.

And there is a fairness argument underneath, which the person struggling makes against themselves far harder than anybody else would ever make it. There are people with real problems. Actual hardship, actual want, actual grief. What claim does somebody like this have on anybody's concern or anybody's time? None at all. So the whole thing gets filed under self-indulgence and put away where it will not embarrass anybody.

But suffering does not check whether it is deserved before arriving. It is not distributed on merit and never has been. A person can be genuinely fortunate and genuinely in trouble at exactly the same time, and the fortune does not reduce the trouble by a single degree. It only removes the vocabulary, which is a cruel arrangement and nobody designed it.

What the position requires

There is another difficulty on top of that one, which is that people in this situation are usually the ones everybody else leans on. They are the capable one, the steady one, the one who handles things when things need handling. That role is not decorative and it is not vanity. Other people's arrangements genuinely rest on it.

So to say anything is not merely to admit something personal. It threatens a structure that a number of people depend upon, and the person knows this precisely, which is why they will get through almost anything rather than say a word about it. It looks like pride from outside. It is much closer to a sense of duty, and duty is far harder to argue somebody out of.

They also have no practice at all. Somebody who has been the strong one since they were young has never once been the one who is helped, and has no idea how it is done. Even if somebody offered directly, they would not know how to accept, and would almost certainly redirect the conversation within a minute out of pure habit and without meaning to.

What the silence costs

The silence does not preserve anything, and that is the thing worth saying most plainly. It feels protective and it feels like the responsible choice. What it actually does is guarantee that nothing changes, because nothing can change while nobody knows, and nobody is going to guess.

It also does something to the relationships themselves. If the people closest to somebody have never once seen them struggle, then whatever they love is not entirely that person, and the person knows it, and so their love arrives at a slight distance and cannot be fully received. The protection produces exactly the isolation it was meant to prevent, which is the shape most protections eventually take.

There is no solution to offer here and anybody who offers one should be treated carefully. What can be observed is that saying one true sentence to one person takes an extremely long time to manage, and that the sky does not fall in, and that the person does not think less of them. Years get spent being completely certain of both of those outcomes, and being wrong about both, and the certainty costs the years.

If this is where you are, please tell somebody, even badly, even in the wrong words and at the wrong moment. The particular loneliness of being admired and unreached is not something anybody should be asked to carry by themselves.

The Better Living

I made The Better Living for the few who have arrived at success and found an emptiness waiting on its far side, not to fix anything, only to look honestly, together. If something here speaks to you, write to me.

Begin with a conversation

If something here has met a quiet truth in you, I would be glad to hear from you. There is no hurry, and nothing to prove, only, if you wish it, a conversation.
